As a family-owned business, our talented team is dedicated to making sure our customers experience the ‘Beal Difference’ and our expert site teams ensure all our homes are built and finished to the very highest quality.
We’ve been speaking to some of our site team members to find out more about their roles and this month we spoke to long-standing Beal bricklayer, Pete Cutsforth, as well as his son Connor and nephew, Morgan, who have both followed in Pete’s footsteps and are now also bricklayers.
Pete joined Beal over 38 years ago and was one of the business’s first apprentices. Along with Connor and Morgan, he has worked across almost all the Beal sites and is currently based at The Greenways in Goole.
Q) Tell us about your roles at Beal – what does a typical day look like?
Pete: We are a gang of bricklayers, so, as our job title suggests, most of our day is spent laying bricks! We take over from the Damp Proof Course (DPC), and, following a drawing which we are given at the start of the day, we do all the brickwork for the house, garage and garden walls.
Q) Tell us about your background and how you got into the role you now have?
Pete: I’ve been with Beal for over 38 years. When I was at college and starting to think about what I wanted to do next I expressed an interest in bricklaying and was put in touch with Beal Homes.
I was interviewed by John Beal, one of the company’s founders and the father of our CEO, Richard. John took a chance on me, and I believe I was one of the company’s first apprentices.
Connor: I’ve been with Beal for over 15 years now. As I was nearing the end of my education, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I knew that I wanted to start earning my own money as soon as possible.
When my dad suggested an apprenticeship with Beal, I knew it was a great way to learn a trade and develop new skills, while earning money at the same time.
Morgan: I was pursuing a career in rugby, and although I still enjoy playing the sport now, I wanted to find a job with a more stable income. Having seen my uncle and cousin both doing well at Beal it seemed like a natural decision for me to apply for a role there.
Q) What attracted you to join Beal Homes?
Connor: My Dad had been at Beal for over 20 years and said it was a very good company to work for and that the management really look after their staff.
Beal has a very good reputation in the area so I knew it would be a company I’d be proud to work for.
Q) What do you enjoy most about your job?
Pete: We all enjoy being outside all day, doing hands-on manual work.
As long-standing Beal employees, we’re all trusted to produce high quality work every time, and work more independently, which we all enjoy.
Q) What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
Morgan: I’m quite into sport and enjoy both watching and playing football and rugby in my spare time.
Pete: I am involved with fostering, we’ve been fostering children for the last 10 years, so most of my time outside of work is spent looking after the children, taking them out to events and days out.
Q) What’s one thing your colleagues wouldn’t know about you
Pete: I’ve been with Beal for so long that everyone knows everything about me!
